How to Integrate Claude API with Zapier

2026-10-29 · 5 min read · SubToAPI Team

Zapier doesn't have a deep native Claude integration the way it does for, say, OpenAI's chat completions. You can still connect Claude to thousands of apps through Zapier, but you'll do it with the Webhooks by Zapier action, which lets you make an authenticated HTTPS request to any API — including Anthropic's — as a step in your Zap.

This guide walks through both the quick path (if your Zapier plan includes a Claude/Anthropic app) and the reliable path that works on every plan: wiring up a webhook call by hand. It also covers why a lot of teams don't point the webhook directly at Anthropic's raw API, and use a wrapper like SubToAPI instead.

Two ways to connect Claude to Zapier

Option 1 — Native app. Some Zapier plans surface a Claude or Anthropic app in the action search. If you have it, it typically exposes a single "Send Prompt" action with fields for model, system prompt, and user message. It's fast to set up but limited: you usually can't control tool use, multi-turn history, or detailed usage metadata.

Option 2 — Webhooks by Zapier. This is the universal method. You configure a POST request with headers and a JSON body, and Zapier treats the response like any other trigger output — you can map fields from it into the next step (Slack, Sheets, email, a CRM, etc.). This is what the rest of this article covers, because it works regardless of your Zapier plan and gives you full control over the request.

Step 1: Get an API key and endpoint

You need two things before touching Zapier:

  1. An API key with access to Claude.
  2. The exact endpoint URL and request shape it expects.

If you're calling Anthropic directly, that means an x-api-key header, an anthropic-version header, and a body shaped like {"model": ..., "max_tokens": ..., "messages": [...]}. That works fine for a single personal key, but it gets awkward the moment more than one person on your team needs to trigger Zaps — you end up sharing a raw production key across Zapier accounts with no per-user visibility into who used what.

This is where a lot of teams instead point the webhook at SubToAPI, which turns your Claude access into a standard Bearer-token HTTPS API (sub_live_... keys) with per-key usage tracking and team seats. You get an endpoint that behaves like a normal REST API — easier to reason about inside a no-code tool like Zapier — plus the ability to issue a separate key per Zap or per teammate without re-authenticating against Anthropic each time. Setup is a signup, grab a key, and you're making requests (/signup, /docs/quickstart).

Step 2: Build the webhook in Zapier

  1. Add a step and search for Webhooks by Zapier.
  2. Choose POST as the action event.
  3. Set the URL. If you're using SubToAPI: https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages.
  4. Add headers:
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY
Content-Type: application/json
  1. Set the payload type to JSON and build the body, mapping fields from earlier Zap steps into the messages array:
{
  "model": "claude-sonnet-4",
  "max_tokens": 1024,
  "messages": [
    {
      "role": "user",
      "content": "Summarize this support ticket in two sentences: {{ticket_body}}"
    }
  ]
}
  1. Test the step. Zapier will show you the raw JSON response, which becomes available to every step after it.

If you want to confirm the request shape before wiring it into Zapier, test it from your terminal first:

curl https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUBTOAPI_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "claude-sonnet-4",
    "max_tokens": 1024,
    "messages": [
      {"role": "user", "content": "Summarize this support ticket in two sentences."}
    ]
  }'

See /docs/messages for the full request/response reference.

Step 3: Parse the response into your next action

Claude's response comes back with the generated text nested inside a content array. In Zapier, after the webhook step runs a test, you'll see fields like content[0].text available for mapping. Drag that field into whatever comes next — a Slack message, a new row in Sheets, a reply email, a Notion page.

A common pattern:

This gives you a working "AI step" inside any Zap without writing a server.

Handling streaming, rate limits, and errors

Zapier's Webhooks action expects a single JSON response, not a stream, so leave stream unset or false in your request body — streaming responses aren't usable inside a Zap step. If you expect long-running generations, check your timeout settings in Zapier (longer completions can take several seconds, which is usually fine but worth testing).

For retries, Zapier will surface HTTP error codes from the response. A 429 means you've hit a rate limit; a 401 means the key or header is wrong. If you're running this across a team with several Zaps hitting Claude in parallel, keep an eye on usage — SubToAPI's dashboard shows per-key call volume and token usage so you can see which Zap is driving cost before it becomes a surprise (/pricing).

Adding tool use or multi-turn context

If your Zap needs Claude to call a tool (e.g., structured data extraction before writing to a database), you can pass a tools array in the same webhook body — see /docs/tools for the schema. For multi-turn context, append prior messages to the messages array in order; Zapier's "Storage by Zapier" action is a simple way to persist conversation history between runs if your workflow needs memory across triggers.

FAQ

Does Zapier have an official Claude app? On some plans, yes — a simplified "send prompt" action exists. For full control over models, system prompts, tool use, and response parsing, Webhooks by Zapier is the more reliable and universally available method.

Can I use my personal Anthropic key directly in Zapier? Yes, technically — set the x-api-key and anthropic-version headers manually. It works for solo use, but for teams it means sharing one key across multiple Zaps with no per-user usage breakdown, which is harder to audit and control.

Why would I use SubToAPI instead of calling Anthropic directly from Zapier? It simplifies auth to a single Bearer token, gives each teammate or Zap its own key, and tracks usage per key — useful once more than one person or workflow is calling Claude from your Zapier account. Start at /signup.
