How to Set Up Team Seats for Claude API

The problem with "seats" on the Claude API

If you've gone looking for a "team seats" toggle in Anthropic's console, you've probably noticed it doesn't exist in the way you'd expect from a typical SaaS. Anthropic's API is built around organizations and API keys, not individual user seats. That means the default way most teams "set up team seats" is to create one org-level API key and paste it into a shared .env file or a password manager — which works, until it doesn't.

Setting up real team seats for Claude API access means giving each person (or each service) their own credential, visibility into who's using what, and the ability to revoke access without breaking everything else. This article covers both the native approach inside Anthropic's console and a faster path using a key-management layer like SubToAPI, so you can pick whichever fits your team size and how much usage tracking you actually need.

What "team seats" should actually give you

Before setting anything up, it helps to be clear on what a proper seat-based setup provides:

Anthropic's console gives you org-level API keys and the ability to create multiple keys under one organization, which covers the first point partially. It does not give you per-seat usage breakdowns, role-based dashboards, or seat billing out of the box — you'd need to build that tracking yourself.

Option 1: DIY setup in Anthropic's console

If you only need a handful of keys and don't need usage-per-person reporting, this is the lightest option:

  1. Log into the Anthropic console and open your organization settings.
  2. Create a separate API key for each team member or service (name them clearly, e.g. backend-prod, jane-dev).
  3. Store each key in your team's secrets manager, scoped to the person or project that owns it.
  4. Set spending limits at the organization level if available, since per-key limits aren't granular.
  5. Rotate or delete individual keys when someone leaves the team.

This gets you isolation between people, but you're on your own for tracking who spent what, enforcing roles, and billing seats separately — you'll likely end up building a small internal dashboard or exporting usage logs manually to reconcile cost per person.

Option 2: Seat-based setup with SubToAPI

If you want seats, roles, and usage reporting without building that infrastructure yourself, SubToAPI wraps your Claude access in a standard HTTPS API with team seat management built in. Each plan (Solo, Team, Scale) includes a dashboard where you add seats, issue per-seat application keys, and see usage per key.

Step 1 — Create your account and pick a plan

Sign up at /signup and choose Team (€19/seat) or Scale (€49/seat) depending on how many people need access and what level of throughput you need. Both plans support multiple seats under one billing account; Solo (€9) is meant for a single developer or project.

Step 2 — Add team members as seats

From the dashboard, invite teammates by email. Each invited member gets their own seat and their own sub_live_... application key — no sharing a single secret across the team.

Step 3 — Issue scoped keys per person or service

Generate a key per seat and hand it to the relevant developer, or attach it directly to a service (staging, production, a specific internal tool). Because each key is distinct, you can revoke one without touching the others.

Step 4 — Point your code at the API

Each teammate uses their own key against the same consistent endpoint:

curl https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUBTOAPI_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "claude-sonnet-4-5",
    "max_tokens": 512,
    "messages": [
      {"role": "user", "content": "Summarize this ticket for the team."}
    ]
  }'
const response = await fetch("https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages", {
  method: "POST",
  headers: {
    "Authorization": `Bearer ${process.env.SUBTOAPI_KEY}`,
    "Content-Type": "application/json"
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    model: "claude-sonnet-4-5",
    max_tokens: 512,
    messages: [{ role: "user", content: "Draft a reply to this customer email." }]
  })
});

Full request and response details are in /docs/messages, and streaming setup (useful for chat-style team tools) is covered in /docs/streaming. If your team is using tool calling across shared prompts, /docs/tools walks through the schema.

Step 5 — Monitor usage per seat

The dashboard breaks down requests and token usage by key, so you can see which seat is driving cost without exporting logs manually. This is the piece that's genuinely missing from a plain Anthropic API key setup — you get it by default here.

Step 6 — Remove or rotate a seat when someone leaves

Deactivate the seat from the dashboard. That key stops working immediately; everyone else's access is untouched.

Best practices once seats are set up

Questions

Does Anthropic's API have native team seats? Not in the way most SaaS products define seats. You get organization-level API keys, but no built-in per-seat billing, roles, or usage dashboards — you'd need to build that layer yourself or use a tool that adds it.

How many seats do I need for a small team? Start with one seat per person who needs direct API access, plus one per production service. It's easier to add seats later than to untangle a shared key that half the team depends on.

Can I mix Team and Scale seats on one account? Plans are set at the account level, not per seat, so choose the plan — /pricing has the full comparison — that matches your team's expected volume, then add seats under that plan.
