Claude API Usage Analytics for Product Teams

2026-10-16 · 5 min read · SubToAPI Team

When a product team asks "how much of our Claude spend is going to the summarization feature versus the chat assistant," the answer usually requires digging through raw logs, guessing which prompt corresponds to which feature, and manually joining token counts against your billing invoice. That's the core problem with Claude API usage analytics: Anthropic's console gives you aggregate billing numbers, but it doesn't break usage down by feature, customer, or team member — and most teams need that breakdown to make product and pricing decisions.

This article covers what usage analytics product teams actually need from a Claude integration, how to capture that data without over-engineering a logging pipeline, and how a tool like SubToAPI gives you per-key usage metadata out of the box.

What "usage analytics" means for a product team

Engineering teams care about latency and error rates. Product teams care about different questions:

None of these questions are answered by a single "total tokens this month" number. You need usage broken down by dimension — by feature, by customer, by API key, by time window — and you need it available somewhere other than an engineer's terminal.

Where teams go wrong

The most common mistake is trying to build this analytics layer by parsing application logs after the fact. Logs are unstructured, timestamps don't line up cleanly with billing periods, and nobody remembers to log the usage object consistently across every code path. By the time someone wants a report, half the data is missing.

The second common mistake is relying entirely on the Anthropic console. It's useful for verifying overall spend, but it has no concept of "feature" or "customer" — every request looks the same from the outside. If you're building a multi-tenant product, this is a dead end for per-customer billing or cost attribution.

A practical structure for usage tracking

Regardless of which tooling you use, usage analytics for a product team needs three things:

  1. A stable identifier per request — which feature, customer, or team member triggered the call.
  2. Structured usage data per call — input tokens, output tokens, and ideally cost, captured at the point of the API response, not reconstructed later.
  3. A queryable store — even a simple database table is fine, as long as it's queryable by date, customer, and feature.

A minimal logging shape looks like this:

async function logUsage(response, context) {
  await db.usageEvents.insert({
    customer_id: context.customerId,
    feature: context.feature,       // e.g. "summarize", "chat"
    input_tokens: response.usage.input_tokens,
    output_tokens: response.usage.output_tokens,
    model: response.model,
    created_at: new Date(),
  });
}

This is the backbone of any usage dashboard: one row per call, with enough context to group and filter. Once this table exists, feature-level cost breakdowns, per-customer reports, and growth trend charts are just SQL queries away.

Where SubToAPI fits in

If you're already calling the Claude API through your own backend, you still need to build the identifier and storage layers above — that part doesn't change. What SubToAPI removes is the friction of getting clean, per-key usage data without maintaining a separate metering system for internal teams or sub-products.

With SubToAPI, you turn your Claude access into an HTTPS API with application-level keys (sub_live_...). You can issue a separate key per feature, per internal team, or per environment, and each key has its own usage metadata visible in the dashboard — request counts, token usage, and activity over time. That gives product teams a built-in first layer of attribution: instead of writing a custom logging table before you've even validated a feature, you can spin up a key, point a feature at it, and see its usage pattern immediately.

A typical request through SubToAPI looks like any other Claude Messages call:

curl https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUBTOAPI_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "claude-sonnet-4-5",
    "max_tokens": 1024,
    "messages": [
      {"role": "user", "content": "Summarize this quarterly report."}
    ]
  }'

Because each key maps to a feature or team, the usage dashboard effectively becomes your first analytics layer. For teams with multiple engineers or a mix of staging and production traffic, team seats mean everyone can see the same usage picture without sharing a single API key and losing attribution entirely.

This isn't a replacement for a proper internal analytics pipeline once you're at scale — if you need per-customer billing inside a multi-tenant SaaS, you'll still want your own customer_id-level logging on top. But for the question most product teams start with — "where is our Claude spend actually going, broken down by feature or team" — per-key metadata gets you there without writing a logging system first. See the quickstart for setup, and the Messages API docs for request details.

Deciding how granular to go

Not every team needs customer-level granularity on day one. A reasonable progression:

Start at Stage 1. It's cheap, requires no new infrastructure, and immediately answers the most common product question. Only move to Stage 3 once you actually have a pricing or billing decision riding on the data — building it earlier is wasted effort.

questions

Does the Anthropic console show usage broken down by feature or customer? No. The console reports aggregate billing and usage totals for your account, not per-feature or per-customer breakdowns. You need to add your own identifiers (separate API keys, or a logging layer with a feature/customer field) to get that granularity.

What's the minimum data I need to track to answer "which feature costs the most"? Input tokens, output tokens, and a feature label per request, stored in a queryable table or visible per API key. That's enough to group cost by feature over any time window.

Can I use separate API keys to track usage per feature without writing custom logging? Yes — issuing one key per feature and checking per-key usage metadata in a dashboard like SubToAPI's gives you feature-level breakdowns immediately, without building a database table first. See /docs/quickstart to set this up.
