Claude API Notion Workspace Integration Guide
Connecting the Claude API to a Notion workspace lets you generate content, summarize pages, and update databases directly from Notion using AI — without copying text back and forth between apps. This guide covers the two practical architectures for doing it: a Notion integration that calls Claude via a backend service, and a lightweight automation that triggers on database changes.
There's no native "Claude for Notion" plugin maintained by Anthropic, so every working integration is custom-built on top of the Notion API and the Claude API. The rest of this article shows exactly how that works, including the parts people usually get wrong: authentication, rate limits, and keeping API keys out of client-side code.
How the integration actually works
Notion's API lets you read and write pages, blocks, and database entries. Claude's API generates or analyzes text. The integration is the glue code that sits between them — usually a small backend service (serverless function, Lambda, or lightweight server) that:
- Receives a trigger (a webhook, a scheduled poll, or a manual API call)
- Fetches the relevant Notion page or database row via the Notion API
- Sends that content to Claude for summarization, rewriting, classification, or generation
- Writes Claude's response back into Notion as a new block, comment, or property value
Notion doesn't support outbound webhooks for every event type, so most integrations either poll a database on a schedule or trigger from an external event (a form submission, a Slack command, a cron job) that already has the relevant Notion page ID.
A basic polling integration
Here's a minimal Node.js example that polls a Notion database for rows marked "Needs Summary" and writes a Claude-generated summary back:
import { Client } from "@notionhq/client";
const notion = new Client({ auth: process.env.NOTION_TOKEN });
async function summarizeNewPages() {
const { results } = await notion.databases.query({
database_id: process.env.NOTION_DB_ID,
filter: { property: "Status", select: { equals: "Needs Summary" } },
});
for (const page of results) {
const text = await getPageText(page.id); // fetch and flatten blocks
const response = await fetch("https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.SUBTOAPI_KEY}`,
"Content-Type": "application/json",
},
body: JSON.stringify({
model: "claude-sonnet-4-5",
max_tokens: 300,
messages: [
{ role: "user", content: `Summarize this Notion page in 3 bullet points:\n\n${text}` },
],
}),
});
const data = await response.json();
const summary = data.content[0].text;
await notion.pages.update({
page_id: page.id,
properties: { Status: { select: { name: "Summarized" } } },
});
await notion.blocks.children.append({
block_id: page.id,
children: [
{ paragraph: { rich_text: [{ text: { content: summary } }] } },
],
});
}
}
Run this on a schedule (every few minutes via cron, or on-demand via a button that triggers a webhook) and it behaves like a lightweight AI assistant living inside your workspace.
Why go through a gateway instead of Anthropic's API directly
You can call Anthropic's API directly from this backend service, but most teams building Notion integrations run into the same three issues:
- Key management across environments. If the integration runs in multiple places (a Lambda for polling, a separate webhook handler for manual triggers), you end up distributing the same raw API key everywhere, which makes rotation and revocation painful.
- No per-integration usage visibility. When Claude calls come from a Notion automation, a Slack bot, and an internal dashboard, a single shared key gives you no way to see which integration is driving cost or hitting limits.
- Streaming and tool use boilerplate. If you want Claude to decide whether to summarize, classify, or extract structured data from a page, you need tool-calling support, and wiring that correctly from scratch adds complexity you don't need for a Notion sync job.
SubToAPI addresses this by turning your existing Claude access into a standard HTTPS API with scoped sub_live_... keys. You can issue one key for the Notion polling job, another for a manual-trigger webhook, and see usage per key in one dashboard — useful when a single person is maintaining several internal automations and needs to know which one is burning tokens. Setup follows the same request shape shown above; see the quickstart and messages docs for the full request/response reference.
Common use cases worth building first
- Meeting notes → structured summary. Paste raw notes into a page, trigger Claude to extract action items into a linked database.
- Content drafting. A "Draft" status on a database row triggers Claude to expand a one-line brief into a full draft block.
- Tagging and classification. Use Claude with tool calling to assign categories or priority levels to incoming database rows based on page content.
- Research digestion. Drop a long PDF excerpt or article into a page; Claude returns a condensed summary with key quotes.
Handling rate limits and streaming
Notion's API has its own rate limits (roughly 3 requests per second per integration), and Claude's API has separate limits based on your plan. When you're processing a batch of pages — say, summarizing 50 unprocessed database rows in one run — stagger your Claude calls rather than firing them all at once. Streaming isn't usually necessary for a Notion backend job since you're writing a final result into a block rather than displaying tokens live, but if you're building a Notion-adjacent chat UI (a sidebar that talks to Claude about the current page), streaming makes the UX feel responsive. SubToAPI supports streaming responses the same way the native Anthropic API does — see streaming for implementation details.
Keeping the integration secure
Never call the Claude API directly from a Notion embed, iframe, or anything that runs client-side JavaScript in a browser — your API key would be exposed to anyone who views the page source. Always route calls through a server you control. If multiple people on your team maintain Notion automations, giving each one a separate key (rather than sharing one Anthropic key across a .env file that gets copied between projects) makes it much easier to audit who's calling what. You can create and manage these keys from the SubToAPI dashboard after signing up for a free trial.
questions
Does Notion have a built-in Claude integration? No official one. You build it using the Notion API for reading/writing pages and the Claude API for generation, connected through a small backend service you host.
Can I trigger Claude automatically when a Notion page changes? Notion doesn't offer granular webhooks for page edits, so most integrations poll a database on a schedule or trigger from an external event tied to the page ID, like a form submission or Slack command.
What's the simplest way to test this without building a full app? Write a short script that fetches one Notion page's text, sends it to Claude via a single API call, and logs the response — confirm that works before adding scheduling, database writes, or multiple integration keys.
