Claude API Embedding Model Alternatives: Full Guide

2026-10-14 · 5 min read · SubToAPI Team

If you've gone looking for a Claude embeddings endpoint, you won't find one. Anthropic's API is built for text and tool-use generation — chat completions, streaming, structured output — not for producing vector representations of text. There is no embed method, no claude-embedding-3 model, nothing in the Messages API that returns a float array for semantic search.

That means if you're building retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, clustering, or deduplication on top of Claude, you need a separate embedding provider and you pair it with Claude for the generation step. This is standard architecture, not a workaround: even teams using GPT-4 or Gemini for generation usually pick a dedicated embedding model rather than whatever embeddings their chat model's vendor happens to offer. This guide covers the realistic alternatives, how they differ, and how to wire one into a Claude-based pipeline.

Why Claude doesn't do embeddings

Anthropic's stated focus is reasoning, instruction-following and safety-aligned generation. Embeddings are a different problem: you want a model trained with contrastive objectives to place semantically similar text close together in vector space, optimized for retrieval metrics, not for writing prose. Anthropic has not shipped one, and there's no public roadmap commitment that they will. Treat this as permanent for planning purposes.

The main alternatives

Voyage AI

Voyage AI is the embedding provider Anthropic officially recommends in its own documentation, which makes it the default choice for teams already building on Claude. It offers general-purpose models (voyage-3, voyage-3-lite) and domain-tuned ones for code and finance. Pricing is per-token, context windows are generous (up to 32k tokens on some models), and benchmarks on retrieval tasks are competitive with OpenAI's offering. If you want the "blessed" pairing with Claude, this is it.

OpenAI text-embedding-3

text-embedding-3-small and text-embedding-3-large are the most widely adopted embedding models in production today, mostly because teams already have an OpenAI key for other things. They support variable output dimensions (you can truncate 3072-dim vectors down to 256 without much quality loss), which is useful for controlling vector database storage costs. Using OpenAI purely for embeddings while using Claude for generation is extremely common and has no technical downside — embeddings and chat completions don't need to come from the same vendor.

Cohere Embed

Cohere's embed-v3 models are strong on multilingual retrieval and have an input-type parameter (search_document vs search_query) that measurably improves retrieval quality by encoding queries and documents differently. If your corpus isn't English-only, Cohere is worth benchmarking before defaulting to OpenAI.

Open-source models

For teams that want to self-host or avoid per-token embedding costs entirely, open models are viable:

These require your own inference infrastructure (GPU or a hosted endpoint), so the tradeoff is operational complexity versus per-request cost. For low-volume internal tools this is often cheaper; for high-throughput production search it usually isn't worth the maintenance.

Google's embedding models

If you're already in the Google Cloud ecosystem, text-embedding-004 via Vertex AI is a reasonable option, particularly for teams that also use Gemini elsewhere and want fewer vendor relationships. Quality is comparable to OpenAI's mid-tier model.

Picking one: what actually matters

Don't overthink this upfront. Pick one, benchmark retrieval quality on a sample of your real queries, and switch later if needed — embeddings are cheap to regenerate compared to the cost of shipping a worse product for months.

Combining embeddings with Claude in a RAG pipeline

The typical shape: embed your documents once at ingestion time, store vectors in something like pgvector, Pinecone, or Qdrant, embed the incoming query at request time, retrieve the top-k matches, then hand the retrieved context to Claude for the actual answer generation.

import OpenAI from "openai";

const openai = new OpenAI({ apiKey: process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY });

async function embed(text) {
  const res = await openai.embeddings.create({
    model: "text-embedding-3-small",
    input: text,
  });
  return res.data[0].embedding;
}

async function askWithContext(query, retrievedChunks) {
  const context = retrievedChunks.join("\n\n");

  const res = await fetch("https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages", {
    method: "POST",
    headers: {
      "Authorization": `Bearer ${process.env.SUBTOAPI_KEY}`,
      "Content-Type": "application/json",
    },
    body: JSON.stringify({
      model: "claude-sonnet-4",
      max_tokens: 1024,
      messages: [
        {
          role: "user",
          content: `Context:\n${context}\n\nQuestion: ${query}`,
        },
      ],
    }),
  });

  return res.json();
}

This is where SubToAPI fits in: it turns your existing Claude access into a standard HTTPS API key (sub_live_...), so the generation half of the pipeline is a normal Messages request with streaming and tool use available if you need them — no separate Anthropic billing account to manage. See the quickstart and the Messages API reference for the exact request shape, including streaming responses for long RAG answers. Embeddings themselves still come from Voyage, OpenAI, Cohere, or your self-hosted model — SubToAPI doesn't do embeddings, it handles the Claude side of the request.

For teams running this across multiple services or team members, a Solo plan at €9 or a Team seat at €19 (see pricing) centralizes API key management for the generation layer without touching how you handle embeddings upstream.

Getting started

  1. Pick an embedding provider based on domain, language, and infra preference — Voyage AI if you want Anthropic's recommended pairing, OpenAI if you want simplicity.
  2. Set up a vector store (pgvector is a fine starting point for most apps).
  3. Wire retrieval into your prompt construction before calling Claude for generation.
  4. If you don't already have a Claude API integration, sign up and get a sub_live_ key in a couple of minutes.

questions

Does Anthropic plan to release its own embedding model? There's no public commitment to one. Anthropic currently recommends third-party providers, Voyage AI specifically, so plan your architecture assuming Claude stays generation-only.

Can I use OpenAI embeddings with Claude for generation in the same app? Yes, this is normal and has no technical drawback. Embeddings and chat generation are independent steps; mixing vendors for each is standard practice in RAG pipelines.

Which embedding model should I start with if I have no strong requirements? Voyage AI's voyage-3 or OpenAI's text-embedding-3-small are both solid defaults — pick whichever you already have billing set up for and switch later if retrieval quality isn't good enough.
