Claude API Authentication with OAuth2: A Practical Guide
Does the Claude API support OAuth2?
Short answer: not for direct API access. Anthropic's Claude API authenticates requests with a static API key (x-api-key header), not OAuth2 access tokens. If you've landed here hoping to swap your API key for an OAuth2 flow against api.anthropic.com, that endpoint doesn't exist — Anthropic's own authentication model is key-based, similar to most LLM providers (OpenAI, Cohere, Mistral all work the same way).
What most developers actually mean by "Claude API authentication with OAuth2" is one of two things: either they're using Claude inside a product that already has OAuth2-authenticated users (web app, mobile app, internal tool) and need to bridge that identity system to Claude calls safely, or they're building a multi-tenant SaaS and want OAuth2-style access control — scoped tokens, expiry, revocation — for the API keys their own customers use. Both are solvable, just not by pointing your app directly at Anthropic with OAuth2. This guide covers the architecture that works in practice.
Why Claude doesn't use OAuth2 natively
OAuth2 is designed for delegated authorization — letting a third-party app act on behalf of a user without seeing their credentials. That model makes sense for things like "sign in with Google" or "let this app read your Gmail." It makes less sense for a raw inference API, where the caller is the authenticated party and there's no separate resource owner to delegate from. API keys are simpler, stateless, and easy to rotate, which is why nearly every LLM provider sticks with them.
The practical implication: if your product needs OAuth2-style auth, you build that layer yourself, in front of your own backend, and your backend holds the actual Claude API key.
The architecture: OAuth2 at your edge, API key behind it
This is the pattern that works for SaaS products, internal tools, and anything with multiple end users:
End user → OAuth2 login (your IdP) → Your backend → API key → Claude API
- Authenticate users with OAuth2 using an identity provider (Auth0, Clerk, Okta, or your own OIDC-compliant server). This gives you access tokens, refresh tokens, scopes, and session expiry for your actual humans.
- Validate the OAuth2 access token on every request to your backend, same as you would for any protected route.
- Your backend calls Claude using a server-side API key that your users never see. The OAuth2 layer controls who can trigger a call; the API key is just the credential your server uses to talk to Claude.
// Express middleware: validate OAuth2 token, then call Claude
app.post('/api/chat', verifyOAuthToken, async (req, res) => {
const response = await fetch('https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages', {
method: 'POST',
headers: {
'x-api-key': process.env.CLAUDE_API_KEY,
'anthropic-version': '2023-06-01',
'content-type': 'application/json',
},
body: JSON.stringify({
model: 'claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022',
max_tokens: 1024,
messages: [{ role: 'user', content: req.body.message }],
}),
});
const data = await response.json();
res.json(data);
});
Your OAuth2 scopes can control things like which users can hit this endpoint, rate limits per tenant, and which Claude models they're allowed to use — all without Claude itself knowing anything about your identity system.
Where this gets painful at scale
The problem with the pattern above is that it leaves you building and maintaining a bunch of infrastructure that has nothing to do with your actual product: per-tenant key scoping, usage metering so you can bill customers accurately, streaming response handling, and audit logs for who called what. None of that is Claude-specific — it's the same plumbing every team building on top of an LLM ends up writing from scratch.
This is the gap SubToAPI fills. Instead of your backend holding one shared Claude API key for everyone, SubToAPI turns your Claude access into a proper HTTPS API with its own application keys (sub_live_...) that you can issue per customer, per project, or per environment. You still put OAuth2 (or any auth you want) in front of your own app for end-user login — SubToAPI handles the layer underneath, so each tenant or service gets its own scoped key instead of sharing one secret, and you get usage metadata per key without building a metering system yourself.
curl https://api.subtoapi.app/v1/messages \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SUBTOAPI_KEY" \
-H "content-type: application/json" \
-d '{
"model": "claude-3-5-sonnet-20241022",
"max_tokens": 1024,
"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Summarize this ticket"}]
}'
You'd pair this with your own OAuth2-authenticated frontend: a logged-in user hits your backend, your backend picks the right sub_live_... key for that tenant, and calls SubToAPI. The OAuth2 session controls access to your app; the SubToAPI key controls access to Claude, scoped per customer or team. Setup takes a few minutes — see the /docs/quickstart guide — and plans start at the Solo tier (€9) up through Team (€19/seat) and Scale (€49/seat) for larger setups, all listed on /pricing.
Practical checklist for securing Claude access behind OAuth2
- Never expose your Claude (or SubToAPI) key to the browser — all calls go through your backend
- Validate OAuth2 access tokens on every protected route, including token expiry
- Issue separate API keys per tenant or environment rather than one shared key for your whole app
- Log which OAuth2-authenticated user triggered which API call, for auditing and cost attribution
- Rotate backend API keys on a schedule, independent of your OAuth2 token lifecycle
- If you support streaming responses, make sure your auth middleware doesn't buffer the whole response before checking the token — see /docs/streaming for handling this correctly
questions
Does Anthropic offer an OAuth2 endpoint for the Claude API? No. Claude API requests are authenticated with a static API key in the x-api-key header. OAuth2 isn't part of Anthropic's authentication model for API access.
How do I add OAuth2 login to an app that calls Claude? Put OAuth2 (via Auth0, Clerk, Okta, or your own OIDC provider) in front of your backend to authenticate end users. Your backend then calls Claude server-side with its own API key — the OAuth2 token never touches Anthropic directly.
How do I give different customers separate, revocable Claude access without OAuth2 on Anthropic's side? Issue separate application API keys per customer instead of sharing one Claude key. SubToAPI supports this natively with per-key usage tracking — see /docs for setup.
