What "downloading Claude" actually means

There's no single "Claude.exe" you install once and run forever. Claude is a model, not a standalone program, so "downloading Claude" resolves differently depending on what you want: a chat app on your desktop, a mobile app, a command-line coding tool, or programmatic access to build something on top of it. This guide covers each of those download paths and helps you pick the right one.

If you just want to chat with Claude, the fastest route is the desktop or mobile app — no technical setup required. If you're a developer who wants to integrate Claude into a product, you don't "download" anything at all; you call an API instead. We'll cover both.

Claude desktop app (Mac and Windows)

Anthropic publishes a native desktop app for macOS and Windows. It's a wrapper around the same assistant you'd use in a browser, but with a few extras:

• Local keyboard shortcuts and a menu bar / system tray presence
• Faster launch than opening a browser tab
• Support for Claude's desktop-only features like local file context in some plans

Installation steps:

1. Go to Anthropic's official site and choose the download for your OS.
2. Run the installer (.dmg on Mac, .exe on Windows).
3. Sign in with your Anthropic account, or create one — a free tier is available before you commit to Pro.
4. Start a conversation immediately after sign-in.

There's no separate "Claude Pro download" — Pro is a subscription tier unlocked inside the same app or web account, not a different binary.

Claude mobile apps (iOS and Android)

Claude has official apps in the Apple App Store and Google Play. Search "Claude by Anthropic" to avoid unofficial clones that sometimes rank highly in app store search results. The mobile app supports:

• Text and voice conversations
• Image uploads for analysis
• Synced conversation history with the web and desktop versions

Installation is standard app-store behavior: search, tap install, sign in with the same account you use elsewhere. No APK sideloading or manual download is needed or recommended.

Claude in the browser

If you don't want to install anything, claude.ai works entirely in-browser and is the same underlying product as the desktop app. This is the lowest-friction way to try Claude and is often what people are actually looking for when they search for a "download" — they just want access, not a local install.

Claude Code (the CLI)

Developers who want Claude inside their terminal and editor use Claude Code, Anthropic's command-line agent for coding tasks. It isn't downloaded from an app store — it's installed via a package manager:

This gives you a claude command you can run from any project directory. It's a different product from the chat apps above — built specifically for reading, editing, and running code with Claude's help — and it requires its own authentication against an Anthropic account or API key.

When you don't need to "download" anything: the API route

If your goal is to build a product or automate a workflow with Claude — a chatbot, a support tool, a content pipeline — you don't want the desktop app at all. You want programmatic access, meaning your code sends requests over HTTPS and gets responses back. Anthropic offers this through its Messages API, authenticated with an API key rather than a login session.

That's a fundamentally different use case from "downloading Claude," and it comes with real infrastructure decisions: how you issue keys per application or per customer, how you meter usage, how you handle streaming responses, and how you manage a team of developers who all need access without sharing one secret key.

Questions

Is there a free version of Claude I can download? Yes. The desktop and mobile apps both support free accounts with usage limits. Paid Pro removes some of those limits but uses the same download.

Do I need to download anything to use the Claude API? No. The API is called over HTTPS from your own code or tools — there's no client software to install, though you may use an SDK or a library like curl to send requests.
